Covestro makes significant progress towards climate neutrality goal, reducing emissions by 99%

Thorsten Dreier, Chief Technology Officer of Covestro, stated that the company is committed to achieving climate neutrality in its operations by 2035. He pointed out, "This project is particularly inspiring, not only because it has had a significant impact on our Scope 1 emissions, but also because its implementation is entirely for environmental benefits and to support our sustainable future strategy
Nitric acid is an important raw material for the production of MDI (diphenylmethane diisocyanate) and TDI (toluene diisocyanate), which are key components of polyurethane and widely used in fields such as mattresses, furniture, energy-saving insulation materials, and car seats.
Nitric acid production has always been an important source of greenhouse gases and a key focus of Covestro's decarbonization efforts over the past decade. The recently put into use NAUCI project is expected to reduce approximately 195000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year, and combined with previous emission reduction projects, it can cumulatively reduce nearly 900000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year.
Victor Ortega, Manager of Covestro Beton Plant and Senior Vice President of Functional Materials and Operations for North America, said, "Projects such as NAUCI have helped us achieve Scope 1 goals, and I believe that as we strive to achieve climate neutrality by 2035, we will achieve even greater success. I look forward to seeing this project have a lasting positive impact on the factory and the Beton community in the coming years
Covestro plans to achieve Scope 1 and Scope 2 climate neutrality at the Beton plant by 2035.
